Dale Vince’s wind-powered car could be the Storm, the Zero or the Nemesis

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

click above and scroll down to watch the video

When he’s not taunting Tesla, Dale Vince is pretty focused on building his wind-powered car. The Zero Carbonista project (previous post) is moving along and the fourth (of six) video about the project is new ready for your viewing pleasure. The front of the car is taking shape and now it needs a name. On the shortlist are: The Zero, The Storm and The Nemesis. I think the Zero Storm would be a good compromise, and I think it’ll sound good with a British accent.

In the video, the biggest problem the team is facing seems to be figuring out the fingerprint entry and startup system. What’s more exciting is the torque potential the designers and engineers discuss towards the end of the video. Check it out after the jump and see what the (indirectly) wind-powered Exige is up to these days.

EU-sponsored report critical of electric vehicles?

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

The European Union has been working on new legislation with the goal of reducing overall carbon emissions to just 130 g/km by 2015. Many believe that electric vehicles are the best way to achieve this ultimate goal, but internal reports may not agree with this assessment, according to the Financial Times. In fact, Jean Syrota, the former French energy industry regulator, is said to have authored a 129-page document that promotes the continued use of the internal combustion engine, albeit ICEs combined with new technology and advanced biofuels. Apparently, the closest that the report comes to suggesting that EVs have any potential is to promote range-extended models that wouldn′t need extremely large capacity battery packs. The report also suggests setting strict speed limits in all of Europe, including Germany.

If rumors are in any way accurate, current President of the EU and the French Republic Nicolas Sarkozy is purposely sitting on the report as it may not agree with his desired intentions for European automakers.

The smart fortwo BRABUS, unveiled today at the LA Auto Show, looks pretty sweet in person. I can do without the BRABUS name stuffed everywhere - floormat, hand brake, gas cap, etc. - but if you’re willing to fork out the $17,990 for the coupe (or $20,990 for the cabriolet), then you probably want your passengers and attentive passersby to know it. And, becuase we’ve got a nice gallery of high-res images of the new model (in black, the silver version wasn’t displayed today), you can decide for yourself if the new look of 41 mpg (highway) is too much or just right. These cars will be avaialable in limited numbers starting next year, but not for just anyone. For now, purchasing the smart fortwo BRABUS will be something only people who already have a fortwo on order can do. Do you have your name on the list?

Brabus tunes the Tesla Roadster - yes, you can get neon with that

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

Brabus is a German tuning company best known for its work on cars from Mercedes-Benz and Smart. At the Essen Motor Show later this month, the company will show off its latest handiwork for none other than the Tesla Roadster. Those who get bored with the near silent hum of the electric motor will now be able to get a new “Space Sound Generator” that provides simulated audio tracks including a ͤ engine, a race engine or various synthetic futuristic sounds like “Beam″ and “Warp.” Visual “enhancements″ include a matte white paint finish, LED running lamps in the front air intake and the always classy under-body neon lightning. Since the electric sports car doesn’t provide Brabus the option of extracting more power out of the engine as tuning firm typically does, the only real functional enhancement is a new wheel and tire package. Pirelli P Zero Nero tires are wrapped around 18-inch front and 19-inch rear wheels. Brabus would also be more than happy to take your money to do whatever level of customization you desire to the Roadster’s interior, as well. Now, there’s just that pesky problem of actually getting a Roadster.

Austin Alt Car: Lighthouse Solar roof, carport an enviously good deal

Monday, October 20th, 2008

When I head just how (comparatively) cheaply you can get solar panels installed in Austin, Texas, I was pretty jealous. The real short version is that a $20,000+, 3 kWh system can be yours for around $6,000 thanks to local and federal tax breaks. And considering the amount of sunshine that Austin gets, this is a real deal.

I head these numbers while hovering around the Lighthouse Solar booth at the Austin Alt Car expo this weekend. The company can add the aforementioned solar panels to your roof or build an entire carport out of the way cool panels. To give you an idea, the carport in this picture is a 1.7 kW size. Depending on the location, it might even make sense to use the special double-sided solar panels. Light-colored concrete and pools, for example, reflect a lot of light upwards and the collectors on the bottom of the glass can suck up the energy just as well as the ones on top.

There are about a half-dozen companies in the Austin area that can install solar panels, and the tax credits would apply no matter who you choose. Even with this many companies offering solar services, Lighthouse has done around 50-60 this year, which I think speaks volumes to the potential of solar energy if it’s made affordable.

VW reportedly developing twin-drive PHEV Golf for 2011

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Volkswagen is currently running a twenty strong test fleet of Twin-Drive Golfs in and around Berlin Germany and the results of this work are expected to hit the retail market around 2011. The current test models are using diesel engines but the production versions are likely to switch to gasoline when their 30-mile electric range has been expended. With coming EURO VI emissions standards that approach the U.S. Tier 2 Bin 5 standards, a diesel hybrid would simply be too expensive to be commercially viable. The drivetrain layout of the Twin-Drive is different from the approach being used by current parallel hybrids or extended range EVs like the Volt. While the Volt ER-EV is a series hybrid setup where only the electric motor is mechanically coupled to the wheels, the Golf is a parallel system but without a transmission. The single reduction gear ratio is comparable to a normal high gear and the torque of the electric motor is used to provide the equivalent of the torque multiplication that is normally achieved with a lower gears. The absence of a conventional gearbox compensates for some of the added weight of the battery and motor. A 12 kWh Sanyo lithium ion battery pack provides 30 miles of driving range and energy storage from the regenerative braking.

Volkswagen to downsize Golf VII

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Click above for more shots of the 2010 MK VI Volkswagen Golf

Despite the fact that the sixth-generation of VW’s insanely popular hatchback has yet to hit the driveways of actual customers, speculation on gen-seven is already well underway. Number-six continues the tradition of enlarging each successive model-year, but that trend is set to come to an end after this redesign. Europe is currently working on legislation to limit carbon emissions and the U.S. is set to cap manufacturer’s fuel efficiency at a much more stringent rate that what we have now. Therefore, the Golf, or Rabbit in the States, should shed a few pounds in its Extreme Makeover and will likely get some smaller entry-level engines. We′d imagine that Volkswagen is hard at work on diesel engines, especially considering the buzz surrounding the Jetta TDI these days, as well as small gasoline engines with forced induction. Whatever happens, expect efficiency to take top priority as the years pass by.

2010 MK VI Volkswagen Golf

It’s been reported that Eaton will be providing superchargers for use on the 1.4L TSI engines for the MK VI Golf including the Rabbit-badged version sold in the U.S. market. The 1.4L TSI is a direct injected four cylinder engine that’s been offered in multiple power levels for a variety of European Volkswagen models for the past two years. The top 140 and 170 hp versions use a combination of a supercharger and a turbocharger to give a performance boost through the engine speed range. The TSI engines provide output matching larger 1.6-2.0L engines with superior fuel economy. The MK VI Golf debuts at the Paris Motor Show next week and goes on sale in the U.S. as the Rabbit next fall. Volkswagen has not yet responded to a request for comment. If the 1.4L TSI joins the U.S. lineup it will join the new 2.0L TDI and hopefully replace the current 2.5L five cylinder.

VW to offer performance diesel Golf GTD

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

Click above for a high-res gallery of the new Golf

It is anything but surprising that Volkswagen will debut a new GTI, the traditional sporting model of its mainstream Golf. What is a bit more surprising, though, is that there will be two other performance editions of the original hot hatch from which to choose, at least in Europe. One of them is the R-model, which should come from the factory with a super-hot 270-horsepower engine along with all-wheel-drive. While that’s cool and all, the real shocker comes in the form of the Golf GTD. That model will come to the party with a high-performance diesel engine making 170-horsepower and somewhat more torque. Automotive News claims that the new hi-po diesel will hit the European market in April of 2009. Since we are just now getting diesels from VW in America, we′re not exactly holding our breath for the GTD stateside. You can bank on the GTI making it on our shores shortly after the regular gen-6 Golf Rabbit.

Moller desings flying hybrid car, don’t hold your breath waiting for it

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

Above: One of Paul Moller’s past projects, a flying hovercraft

Moller has designed another car which will never, ever see the light of day. This time, it’s a hybrid flying car which uses both gas and electric power for its eight fans, which would theoretically provide liftoff. Moller claims that its car has been fully designed already and has been tested in small scale. So, why not just go ahead and continue on with the project? Money, or lack thereof. It seems that the company, which envisions a future where crowded highways are a thing of the past as cars lift off into the sky, is in some serious debt and is in danger of closing down entirely. The hybrid flying car has so far been funded by a wealthy business man from Russia who wanted to escape the traffic he encounters daily when driving to Moscow from his country home. When he found out it would cost more than $5 million to continue the project, he bailed. Too bad, a flying hybrid car is just what the world needs, no?

Volvo Green Racer takes on the World

Monday, July 21st, 2008

Click to view a hi-res gallery of the Volvo C30 Green Racer

In the campaign to make racing greener, the World Touring Car Championship has been a leader. Following the example set by its sister company Audi at Le Mans, Volkswagen’s Spanish subsidiary Seat began taking race wins in the WTCC in diesel-powered Leons. But the series has announced it is beginning to phase in ethanol, and of all the carmakers in the world, Volvo has stepped up to the plate.

We brought you initial news of the C30 Flexifuel Green Racer when it was unveiled for the local Swedish Touring Car Championship, in which it has already been winning races against fossil-fuel regulars. Volvo has now revealed, however, that the Green Racer is heading to the top-tier World Touring Car Championship. The event will be a one-off demonstration for the time being, as the Volvo won’t be eligible for points and will only compete in the one race, next weekend at Brands Hatch. For both Volvo and the WTCC, however, it should be an interesting exercise. Check out the press release after the jump and the images in the gallery below.

Geneva ‘08 Preview: Alfa Romeo 159 goes on a diet, drops nearly 100 lbs

Wednesday, December 31st, 1969

Click the Alfa 159 for a high-res gallery

Aside from powertrains, one of the big areas where automakers are focusing their efforts to improve efficiency is mass reduction. As more and more features have been added to cars over the past few decades, weights have ballooned significantly. The lovely and talented Alfa Romeo 159 sport sedan isn’t yet available in the U.S., but will hopefully be part of the lineup when the brand returns here in a couple of years. In the meantime, the Italians have put the 159 on a diet and managed to shave off nearly 100lbs as part of a mid-cycle refresh. The 159 has new lighter wheels with optimized material properties and a new casting method. Suspension and brake components have been switched to new aluminum alloys and the anti-roll bars are now tubular instead of solid. Each change save only a small amount, but ultimately it all starts to add up to some serious poundage. It’s a direction everyone will be heading in the coming years.

Alfa 159 MY 08, berlina and Sportwagon

Widely appreciated by critics and the European clientele, the 159 model (berlina and Sportwagon) is refreshed proposing some aesthetic re-touches, a widening of the range available, and numerous changes in the field of comfort and mechanics. The spirit of the car, obviously though, remains unchanged: in fact the Alfa 159 is an exclusive berlina which combines refined Italian “style” with the “sporty elegance” of Alfa Romeo.
The Alfa 159 Sportwagon MY 08, instead re-interprets the concepts of Italian style, performance and sporty handling, adding flexibility and versatility in the use of the prestige station wagon space.

Renewed design and widening of the range

As regards to the style, the most noticeable differences have been the changes to the cockpit. The Centro Stile Alfa Romeo has been involved in the interior design, from the dashes (Titanium coloured) to the upholstery, which in the Sport and TI versions is a striking black. The instrument display has new graphics, whilst another change is the multifunctional “user-friendly” satellite navigator at the centre of the dashboard. The “dual-zone” automatic climate control is today even more ergonomic and easy to use.
Not to be forgotten, the new wraparound ergonomic seats (rear and front) in their sporty set-up guarantee increased comfort and are perfect for long journeys. These winning characteristics are even more evident in the TI model with the sporty seats, now available in leather as well as black, and adorned with the Alfa Romeo logo woven into the headrests.
Further news in the Alfa 159 MY 08 and 159 Sportwagon MY 08 range, is the introduction of the rear logo, fitted with a “push” system, for immediate and safe opening of the boot. The upholstery is also available in the exclusive “Alfatex” fabric (for the Distinctive version). Lastly, exclusive to the Sportwagon model, is the introduction of the Fix&ampFold system, which allows total use of the baggage space by quickly and simply, folding down the rear seats.
The new Sport set-up broadens the range of the 159 model (berlina and Sportwagon). The Sporty connotation, is helped on the exterior, by the exclusive 17″ alloy wheels, with a specific 5-spoke design (combined to 225/50 tyres). The interior, instead, boasts the sporty driving-wheel replete with radio controls, the gear stick lined in leather with black stitching, the new sports seats swaddled in black Alfatex fabric along the sides and Floccato textile on the seat, available either in black or red. For further sportiness, the roof, luggage rack and panneling are in black whilst the dashes are in “brushed aluminium″. The display panel has new sporty graphics. Lastly, the rich range of features which come as standard include: dual-zone climate control, fog-lights, VDC and the innovative Blue&MeTM system which allows phone-calls and listening to music as you drive, safely and simply, thanks to the Bluetooth voice recognition technology.
Lastly, the new range introduces three new tints (Ice White, Crystal Blue and Grey Indigo) and three not-seen-before alloys (16″ or 17″, in a sporty or elegant design).

Changes in the field of propulsion and mechanics

On the new versions of the Alfa 159 MY 08, two changes have taken place: firstly, in the field of safety, the new “electronic Q2″ system now comes as standard. Second is the introduction of the 3.2 ͢ 260 CV with front traction (up to now only available with the Q4) which allows a top speed of 250 km/h.
Furthermore, the Alfa 159 MY 08 and 159 Sportwagon MY 08 guarantee a road handling with no compromises, thanks to the precise steering and supensions used on both vehicles. In the front, a high wishbone solution enables maximum side handling, great efficiency and response in the handling with superb movement. In the rear, a multiple bracket suspension makes the vehicle extremely stable in high-speed manoeuvres and very agile in “tight-driving” conditions like all true sport cars. Furthermore, the 3.2 V6 has a ̮ traction control that operates permanently, with three differentials. A maximum 57% torque can be driven to the rear wheels with the self-locking Torsen C that manages the engine power transfer, leaving 43% traction to to the front wheels.
A further change made to the 2008 range, is the optimization applied to structure of the model. In fact, the technicians, have revisited the technological process for the realization of some details in the two cars (berlina e Sportwagon), with the aim of improving comfort, dynamism, and actual consumption as perceived by the client in different driving conditions. For example, the alloy wheels, which are lighter in comparison to previous solutions, are made via the optimization of the mechanical properties of the alloys. Using “flow-forming″ technology for the larger dimensions. At the same time, the front suspension brackets are made in aluminium. In the same manner, the stabilizing bar is “tubular″, and the front brake calipers (on the 4 cylinder versions) are in single-body aluminium. These modifications, united to some aerodynamic refining, have led to a 45 kilo reduction in the vehicle’s total weight.

First class security

Obviously, the Alfa 159 MY 08 confirms the extraordinary attention made to all aspects which involve safety. A care which allowed the preceding model to obtain 5 prestigious Euro NCAP stars. The vehicles include: ABS complete with EBD, the sophisticated VDC (Vehicle Dynamic Control), the ASR (Anti Slip Regulation) system, and HBA (Hydraulic Brake Assistance) which comes into use in case of an emergency brake. When HBA is in use the emergency lights automatically switch on. Lastly, the Hill Holder system facilitates sloped starts. It’s in the field of passive security though that the Alfa 159 MY 08 and 159 Sportwagon MY 08 have their major strength. The most important features are the mountings (pre-tensioner buckle and inertia-reel safety-belts) front seats with anti-whiplash head restraints, and the availability of 8 airbags (worth noting the knee airbag airbag and side airbags that run alongside the glass surfaces). In addition to all this, we add superb torsional rigidity in the frame placing the model at the top of their range.
This is thanks to the new “premium” floorpan that utilises the latest dual-phase steels, multiple sheet metal and precision welding, as well as the numerous interventions Alfa Romeo engineers carried out on the body and architecture.

A precise response to every request

The 2008 range hosts a wide array of engines and transmission. On offer the 1.8 with 140 CV, three engine JTS with variable valve timing on both inlet and exhaust camshaft: the 3.2 V6 24v with 260 CV, the 2.2 with 185 CV and the 1.9 with 160 CV a power range between 81 e 85 CV/l. All are high-performance propulsions that respect the environment, and use the JTS (Jet Thrust Stoichiometric) combustion system. Furthermore, the diesel set-up is made up by the 2.4 JTDM 5-cylinder 20v with 210 CV and the two 1.9 JTDM (with 150 CV and a 120 CV), all fitted with a particulate filter. Concluding the offer, depending on the model version, is the automatic 6-speed gearshift, automatic Q-Tronic gears and sequential self-shifting Selespeed gears.
Lastly, depending on the model, the accessories range include a long list of systems and applications offered as standard or on request. Including: the unique Frau(R) floral print upholstery, the tri-zone climate control, electronic seats, Cruise Control, 7 airbags, VDCror system with hill holder, parking sensors, and voice controlled satellite navigator with mobile communications. Furthermore, available as optionals, is TMPS (warning sensor in case of insufficient tyre pressure) and new seats in a sporty configuration, upholstered in Tibet fabric.

Look for more bio-fueled Aston Martin racers in 2008

Wednesday, December 31st, 1969

Last year, Barwell Motorsport’s bio-ethanol powered Aston Martin DBRS9 proved green fuels can be competitive in racing. That success did not go unnoticed, and Cadena Motorsport will follow in Barwell’s footsteps, converting its yellow DBRS9 to run on the greener juice as well. The British GT Championship’s website caught up with Cadena drivers Barrie Whight and Gavan Kershaw. Whight says Aston Martin’s racing partners see the use of green fuels as very attractive because it improves their corporate environmental responsibility. It’s likely to only get better, too, as other major series like the ALMS help encourage further innovation by embracing green racing initiatives. The bio-ethanol conversion for the Cadena DBR͇ is underway and should be finished by the end of this month.

You may also recall that in January, Aston Martin Racing announced that its new Vantage G͊ racer would also be E85-capable. And lest you think the Aston Martin biofuel migration is exclusive to modern racers, one of the entrants in the 2008 New York-to-Paris “Great Race” is a vintage ‘67 Aston Martin Dʚ converted to run on E85. It’s no secret that automotive technology is often tested on the racetrack before making its way into passenger cars. Maybe the well-heeled (and James Bond) will be cruising in bio-fueled roadgoing Astons in the not-too-distant future.

India running low on oil, looks to Turkey (and beyond) for help

Wednesday, December 31st, 1969

With India’s emergence in recent years as a booming automotive market, the country needs a booming supply of oil to power all the new vehicles. Unfortunately for Indians, they don’t have nearly enough domestically-produced oil, so they are forced to import their supplies from other countries. In an effort to reduce dependency on the Middle Eastern oil-producing nations, Indians are looking to get oil from countries in Central Asia and Africa. Purchasing the oil is all well and good, but how then does India get the oil from the ground in some other country to the tanks of cars in its own? According to this article, through massive pipelines and oil tankers across a sea and an ocean.

The article also highlights the point that other emerging countries, especially China, are all fighting for the same oil supplies, along with the already established players in Europe and the U.S. There’s only so much oil to go around, folks, and every country is trying to get their hands on it.

Indian bike makers working on natural gas options in response to Tata Nano

Wednesday, December 31st, 1969

Motorcycle, scooter and moped manufacturers in India are worried. Since Tata announced their ultra-cheap Nano, the two-wheeled industry is abuzz with worry that the populace will quickly abandon their old single-track vehicles for the safety and convenience of a four-wheeler if the price points get too close. This is a rational concern, and it is exactly why Tata’s created the Nano in the first place.

In an effort to persuade buyers to stick with their bikes, the major manufacturers in India, including Bajaj, Honda and Kinetic, are all working on natural gas options for their various offerings. According to this article, each of these companies has contacted Energtek, a leader in absorbed natural gas (ANG) technology for help in implementing the conversion process. The advantages to using the ANG lie primarily with price, however there are also eco-benefits to be had, as natural gas burns cleaner than other fossil-fuels. We have to wonder, though, what would stop companies like Tata from using similar technology in their low-priced automobiles.
