Power of h, Lexus hybrid’s new TV ads, don’t mention features of hybrids

I was watching Lost on ABC last night and caught a TV commercial for the Power of h, Lexus hybrid’s new ad campaign. The spot actually had nothing to do with hybrids, it (you can watch it for yourself below) was all about missing letters of h, somehow gone from key boards, news papers, etc. The only way you would know it was a commercial about hybrids, cars even, was the last few seconds of the commercial: the letter h has found a better place in the Lexus hybrid moniker. Call me crazy but why not mention hybrids get good fuel economy or something informative? Oh, right.

TV ad for Chevy Volt: environmentalists, let dogs lick you instead of bathing

Ladies and gentleman, GM has a competitor for the worst ad is the history of ads (I’ve embedded it below the fold). First, some background, the video background in the ad is apparently taken from a web video someone took of a dog licking a bare foot (also below the fold). You think that would be bad enough but it just gets worse. The following text appears over the dog’s actions:

If you care about the environment, you could save water and let your dog give you a bath. Chevy cares about the environment. That’s why we’re working on an extended range electric car expected to go up to 40 miles without a drop of gas. The Chevy Volt concept.

Okay, I think I can almost see what they were trying to achieve. The ad recently aired on Adult Swim’s Robot Chicken, which is aimed at a young, hip, ironic, etc. demographic. But this is probably a text book example of how not to sell a car. There were criticisms that GM’s advertising for the EV1 was designed to prevent sales. Is GM doing the same thing for the Volt? Or is GM just horrible at advertising? The ad has been airing since November.

VIDEO: Old TV commercial for all-electric Toyota RAV4EV

GM’s electric car, the EV1, was the star of the popular documentary Who Killed the Electric Car? but GM wasn’t the only large carmaker to build fully electric vehicles when California law demanded it. Ford had the Ranger EV and Toyota made an electric version of the RAV4 SUV, called the RAV4EV, which many people (including myself) liked better than the two-seat EV1. Today, when a used RAV4EV is offered for sale, it almost always costs a pretty penny thousands or tens of thousands more than then when they were available at the dealer.

I came across an apparent TV commercial for the electric RAV4EV (see above video) and was really struck by the simple words “now available.” Then I realized why: it’s a TV commercial for a fully electric car and I have never really seen one before (EV1 and Volt commercials don′t count because they suck). Ford had the Ranger EV and Toyota made an electric version of the RAV4 SUV, called the RAV4 EV. Many people (including yours truly) liked the little Toyota sport-ute better than the two-seat EV1. Today, when a used RAV4 EV is offered for sale, it almost always costs a pretty penny — thousands or tens of thousands more than then when they were available at the dealer.

We came across a TV commercial for the electric RAV4 EV (see above video) and were really struck by the simple words “now available.” Why? It’s a TV commercial for a fully-electric car. Top two American Idol finalists will get Ford Escape hybrids

Ford is really going all-out to promote its hybrids. Latest case-in-point: the last two finalists in this season’s popular FOX television series American Idol will receive a Ford Escape hybrid. The American Idol giveaway comes right after a heavily promoted fictional hybrid Ford mustang in NBC’s Knight Rider TV movie. Last year, Ford aired a commercial for the Escape hybrid that included a father telling his daughter he didn′t think he needed to talk about his hybrid. The corporate mind at Ford has apparently changed concerning this approach; the idea now is to clearly mention Ford hybrids to as many people as possible.

Ed Begley Jr. powers the Independent Spirit Award with stationary bicycle

Last night on the Independent Spirit Awards, an award show for independent films, there was a joke about Ed Begley Jr. powering the entire show (lights, sound, etc) by pedaling a stationary bike. Ed, an actor known to be very eco-friendly, didn’t really power the entire show but the organizers did use green power to show off their Independent Spirits. Biodiesel generators powered the show’s electrical systems (lights, sound, etc.) and the organizers found other ways to make the entire show very green. Will the Oscars be able to top Begley on a bike?

John Travolta flies a hybrid Boeing jet?

Last night during the Oscar telecast, host Jon Stewart joked to the audience, “Whoever owns the Boeing 707 parked on La Brea Avenue, your landing lights are on.” As actor/aviator John Travolta ran onstage and bolted through and exit, Stewart comforted the glitterati, telling them, “Don′t worry, it’s a hybrid.”

Now, while John Travolta is a pilot and really does own a Boeing 707 (finished in classic Quantas livery, as seen here, parked at his home in a private “fly-in” community), the company does not make hybrid jets. Boeing is, however, exploring electric engine starts and, more recently, biofuel-powered jets with Virgin Atlantic. You can watch a video with Branson talking about the Virgin biofuel jet below the fold. For the second year in a row, NRDC also worked with Oscar to reduce the show’s ecological footprint with energy coming from wind farms and biodiesel. The Independent Spirit Awards, however, drank Oscar’s milk shake by using an even greener power source: Ed Begley Jr.

Video flashback: Electric car ridiculed on Two and a Half Men

It’s EV flashback time. An electric car was featured in a 2004 episode of the CBS comedy series Two and a Half Men (watch the video below the fold). The mother of the odd brothers in the show (Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer) enjoys her electric car but needs to exchange her EV with Sheen’s Mercedes to impress a potential client. The real estate agent mother needs the luxurious gas burner because she is trying to sell a house to a Saudi Prince, and dear old mom doesn’t think he′d be too keen on her EV. I don’t recognize the type of electric car featured here but it looks like a very normal car, so I would guess it’s an NEV or pure fiction.

“Misleading” Saab TV biofuel ad yanked in UK

A TV ad for Saab BioPower was yanked off the air in the UK for tying bioethanol to reduced carbon output. According to the UK’s Advertising Standards Agency, Saab’s “Release Me″ commercial (watch it below the fold) incorrectly states that using bioethanol-capable cars reduces your carbon footprint. The ad said carbon is reduced thirty percent when you drive with bioethanol. Unfortunately for Saad, it’s closer to carbon neutral if you measure from seed to tail pipe. However misleading the ad campagn, I think the “more horsepower and a smaller carbon footprint” idea is very compelling.

Chevy TV commercial uses paper SUV to convince children hybrid SUVs are green

Chevy has two new TV ads for its Tahoe hybrid. First a little background. The Chevy Tahoe hybrid won Green Car Journal’s Green Car of the Year award last year. A full-size SUV winning a green car award supplied much comedic fodder for Top Gear (see first video below the fold). Okay, the first new Tahoe hybrid ad (see second video below the fold) begins with a riddle: Which is heaver, a hundred pounds of bricks or a hundred pounds of feathers? If you figured out they are the same weight, then according the ad, you are just as smart as the Chevy Tahoe hybrid, winner of Green Car of the Year award.

The second ad (see third video below the fold) begins with children wearing paper car costumes. The small paper cars are uncomfortable and have no room for their “stuff.” Just around the corner, however, is a giant paper SUV and when the children see it, they are ecstatic. They throw off their small paper cars and run to the paper SUV. The teacher character in the commercial explains the paper SUV has the same fuel economy of small cars (like the Camry), room for your friends and most importantly, room for all that “stuff” the children are carrying around for some reason. “I guess they like it” the commercial’s teacher character concludes.

I have to admit, I really like these ads. I think they’re the best hybrid ads out there. I might not agree with the message that hybrid SUVs are green but at least these ads have a message. Recent hybrid ads from GM and Lexus are too vague for my taste. These Chevy actually persuade with facts about the Tahoe’s fuel efficiency or the CotY award. Besides, SUVs are the only vehicles large enough to carry all my “stuff.”

TÜV picks the Kia cee’d for latest environmental certificates

In the process of creating and building the Kia cee′d, Kia has won two environmental certificates from the well-known German institution TÜV. At a ceremony in Seoul, Korea on Friday, TÜV gave Kia DFE (Design for Environment) and a LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) certificates for the way Kia is building the cee′d in Zilina, Slovakia. The DFE award certifies that the car was environmentally designed and developed. The LCA takes a broader look, and is given to vehicles that have a lower lifetime environmental impact. TÜV certificates for green cars are not often awarded; when the 2008 Mercedes C-Class won a similar certificate from TÜV last year, it was just the second such certificate for a car, ever.

Kia cee’d receives environmental green light from TÜV

Kia Motors has been presented with two international certificates which recognise the advanced environmental design and manufacturing processes behind the Kia cee’d.

Globally recognized, German-based, T&UumlV presented Kia with a DFE (Design for Environment) and a LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) environment certificate at a special ceremony in Seoul, Korea, on 25 April, after rigorous inspection of the company’s design operations and the manufacturing facility at Zilina in Slovakia. The Kia cee’d, designed for and made in Europe, is the first Korean car to receive such recognition.

Mr Hyoung-Keun Lee, Senior Executive Vice President and COO, International Business Division of Kia Motors Corporation, enthused; ‘The awarding of two international environment certificates for the Kia cee′d and its excellent 5-Star rating in EuroNCAP crash testing are first-time achievements for a Korean automotive company of which we can all be proud.

‘Our Zilina facility was environmentally certified in 2007 and later this year we will start manufacturing cee’d vehicles with fuel-stretching and CO2 reducing technologies from our experimental eco_cee’d line-up, further underlining Kia’s strong and continuing drive to minimize its impact on the environment,’ concluded Mr Lee.

DFE (ISO 14062) evaluates a car’s environmental friendliness during its design and development, plus the ease with which the car can be disassembled and its level of recyclability. DFE also requires that the assembly plant for the car reaches ISO 14001.

LCA (ISO 14040) examines both the car’s overall manufacturing process and its lifetime environmental impact, including choice of materials and measures to reduce fuel consumption and engine exhaust emissions. The cee′d features lightweight all-aluminium engines (weighing 15 kg less) and Kenaf (a form of jute) recycled materials form its door trim panels.

Last year, Kia’s Zilina factory was certified as an ‘environmentally-friendly’ facility when Kia Motors Slovakia (KMS) was presented with an ISO 14001 international certificate of environmental management. Many of the production and waste-management technologies in operation at Zilina are among the very best available in the world, with a minimised impact on the environment.

Mr In-Kyu Bae, President of Kia Motors Slovakia, said ‘When launching vehicle and component production, we focused our attention on observing all environmental regulations in both spirit and letter. Personally, I am very glad we had a chance to prove our commitment to being ‘environmentally-friendly’. We received the internationally renowned environmental certificate ISO 14001 within a year of starting production and we can be proud of our achievements to gain these new certificates.’

TÜV NORD environmental certificates are not easily earned. The only significant vehicles to achieve both DFE and LCA certificates in recent years are the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (2005) and Mercedes-Benz C-Class (2006).
