Picture perfect install of a Tesla Roadster drivetrain

One of the good things of having the Tesla Roadster assembled close to at lesat some of its customers is that they can actually go to the factory and see how their car is being made. This is what Bill Arnett did, and he not only had the chance to see his Roadster’s drivetrain installed, but also got permission from Tesla to take pictures of the whole process; watch along here. The rest of the car was assembled in the UK and shipped (by air). The photos were taken on Nov. 12th, and we can see how the ESS (battery), the motor and the PEM (Power Electronics Module) are all packaged into the Roadster’s sleek package. Brabus is a German tuning company best known for its work on cars from Mercedes-Benz and Smart. At the Essen Motor Show later this month, the company will show off its latest handiwork for none other than the Tesla Roadster. Those who get bored with the near silent hum of the electric motor will now be able to get a new “Space Sound Generator” that provides simulated audio tracks including a V8 engine, a race engine or various synthetic futuristic sounds like “Beam” and “Warp.” Visual “enhancements” include a matte white paint finish, LED running lamps in the front air intake and the always classy under-body neon lightning. Since the electric sports car doesn’t provide Brabus the option of extracting more power out of the engine as tuning firm typically does, the only real functional enhancement is a new wheel and tire package. Pirelli P Zero Nero tires are wrapped around 18-inch front and 19-inch rear wheels. Brabus would also be more than happy to take your money to do whatever level of customization you desire to the Roadster’s interior, as well. Now, there’s just that pesky problem of actually getting a Roadster.

Update on the Japanese 2nd cousin (twice removed) of the Tesla Roadster, the K.08

We last heard from the all-electric K.08 from Ken Okuyama Cars at the Geneva Motor Show but as the months slipped by we started to wonder whether the car was still a go. Finally, news has started to trickle in. First, we learned that Ken Okuyama Design had hired long-time Chrysler designer Michael Castiglione, who penned the Dodge Challenger Concept, to do some work on future cars and furniture. Now we’ve learned that Okuyama-san held a press conference in a Tokyo parking garage yesterday where he was accompanied by the gas-powered and topless K.07 as well as the K.08. The talk centered mostly around the K.07 which has buyers for the entire 2008 output of 24 vehicles. The queue for the 99 units to be built next year will officially start forming on the 1st of November. As for the K.08, the prototype at the conference lacked both battery and motor which is not to say it won’t be built but will likely take some more time to get the electric drivetrain together. Hopefully it won’t take too long since the K.07 is also supposed to be available in an all-electric version as is the upcoming K.09 to be unveiled at the next Geneva Motor Show. So, what’s this car have to do with the Tesla Roadster? Believe it or not, they both share British DNA from the Lotus Elise.

German green energy company likes the Tesla Roadster, orders 11

Matthias Willenbacher runs this German green energy company called Juwi and like others in his position, had a strong interest in a car that could be powered by renewable energy. He somehow not only got hold of a Tesla Roadster to try out, but also some green sports car consulting expertise in the guise of one Heinz-Harald Frentzen, fellow countryman and former Formula 1 driver. We recently noted Heinz-Harold has his own hybrid racing team which employs the greener version of the Gumpert Apollo.

Apparently the test drive went quite well, if our ability to translate French is accurate. Although the Roadster wasn′t likely to impress the racing car driver on the Autobahn with its 125 mph top speed, the quickness with which it arrived there must have. According to Le Blog Auto, Mr. Willenbacher has ordered up 11 of the electric beauties. Why 11? We don′t know. If it were us, we′d have definitely gone for an even dozen. When the cars are finished being built they won′t all be delivered to the Willenbacher estate but rather to his company headquarters (which, incidentally, produces more energy than it consumes), where they will serve as official company vehicles. We expect Juwi may soon be flooded with applications from eager thrill job seekers.

British Motor Show Preview: Ford to intro 42mpg Fiesta Zetec S

We’re only a week away from the British Motor Show and we’ve got some info on the sportier version of the new Fiesta. The Zetec S will be officially unveiled in London with a brand new 1.6L four cylinder rated at 118hp. In the Fiesta the new engine will get you up to 62 mph in 9.9 seconds. Along the way the Fiesta Zetec S consumes gasoline at the rate of 41.6 mpg. Carbon dioxide emissions are rated at 139 g/km. All of this bodes well for what we can expect when the Fiesta debuts in North America in early 2010. Like the Mazdό with which it shares its platform the Fiesta is actually lighter than the previous generation model. More than half of the Feista structure is made of high strength steel giving it increased strength at a lower mass. Ford still hasn’t revealed which engines wil go into the US Fiesta but this 1.6L seems likely to be part of the lineup.

Ford’s eagerly-anticipated new Fiesta is still around 18 months from its US launch, but Ford is already testing the cae here in the States. The initial plan was to only offer Americans the four-door sedan, but Ford recently announced that the three- and five-door hatchbacks would be offered as well. Fiestas for the North American market will be built at Ford’s Cuautitlán, Mexico assembly plant beginning in early 2010. The other day, a reader let us know that he spotted one of the prototype Fiestas tooling around on I-75 in southeast Michigan and was lucky enough to have a camera handy. Keep in mind that this particular car is covered in heavy camouflage to prevent all the non-car nuts from seeing what it is. The production model will look very much like the Verve concept that appeared at auto shows earlier this year. Thanks to Andrew for the tip!

Silicon Valley HUMMER dealership closes … for now

The anti-icon of the green transportation movement is about to lose a sales outlet in the home of the American high-tech industry. With sales of HUMMERs down 22 percent in 2007 and gas prices well on their way to $4/gallon and more it’s understandable that a dealer might be reluctant to spend several million dollars on a new showroom and off-road test track. Ron Battistella, owner of Silicon Valley HUMMER, stopped selling new vehicles early this month and will shut down the service department at the end of March after GM decided to take back his franchise. Even though Battistella won’t be selling the big SUVs anymore, the area likely won’t be without their military poseur fix for long. There are several other GM dealers in the area, one of whom will likely take over the franchise soon. The question is will any other dealer be willing to invest the money in the kind of dealership that GM wants.

Obama says “Yes, we can” to hybrid Hummers

Leading presidential candidate Barack Obama earmarked $1 million for research on turning Hummers into hybrids. The earmark money will go to the Illinois Institute of Technology (Obama just happens to be the senator from Illinois) for the development of a cost-effective hybrid conversion kit. These kits could turn the army’s gas guzzling Humvees into fuel efficient hybrids and would be a real endorsement for hybrid conversion in general.

The military is very interested in electric power trains because they offer many advantages on the battlefield like shorter supply lines and quiet operation. Obama has also been a very big supporter of hybrids even calling for every single government car to be a plug-in hybrid when it becomes possible. While, technically, GM can hybridize their Hummers and celebrities like Paris Hilton are willing to voice support for such a plan, GM probably won’t make a hybrid Hummer.

No, I don’t get this story either.

Apparently, someone has turned an actual Hummer ˓ into a remote control vehicle. That someone is Engineer Dr James Brighton from Cranfield University, who spent a month adapting the iconic vehicle into something you can control from your hands. What’s the green angle here? In a few years, H3s running on biofuel and diesel will be available. Sure, we knew this already, but now any of you who are interested in having the largest RC on the block can imagine it filling up your toy at the local biodiesel co-op. Hehe.

I double-checked, and there isn′t an April 1 embargo date on this story. The Mischief PR agency put the release out and, for what it’s worth, they claim to be “the most straight talking agency in the industry.”

E85-capable DI V-6 moves from HUMMER HX concept to H3 by 2010

During a first drive event for the new HUMMER H3T in Moab, Utah, Mike Levine of PickupTruck.com got confirmation of an engine change coming to the H3 lineup. When the H3 debuted it was saddled with the 3.7L inline five cylinder from the Chevy Colorado pickup it was derived from. Unfortunately, that engine struggled mightily with the H3’s 4,700lb mass. That meant it worked hard all the time and got notoriously lousy fuel economy. When a V-8 engine option was added last year, it got the same fuel economy as the five because it wasn’t working so hard.

At the Detroit Auto Show HUMMER showed the HX concept with a flex-fuel version of GM’s direct injection 3.6L V-6. Thanks to Mike, we now know that engine will move into the H3. Although Mike wasn’t given a timeline, GM has previously said that all HUMMERs would be biofuel capable by 2010. The DI V-6 is both more powerful and more fuel efficient than the five cylinder, meaning it doesn’t have to strain as hard and with cellulosic ethanol hopefully coming on stream in the next few year, the ethanol option should get more palatable as well. Now if most of the people who drive these things could just come to grips with the fact that they don’t actually need such a vehicle in the first place we’d be all set.

Treehugging Hummer?

The erroneous contention that a Hummer is more efficient and earth-friendly than a Prius over the vehicles′ lifetime has sailed across the net for months. The argument defies common sense, and has been debunked repeatedly. The “studies″ were flawed by design, but they served the purpose of sowing confusion and doubt. The point by point rebuttal to this nonsense can be found here and here. To take just one point, it is presumed that a Hummer will drive more miles than a Prius, thus spreading out its environmental impact over a longer period of time. Huh?

So, when we saw the picture to the right, we had to wonder: is this Hummer a rolling advertisement for bad science or just a twisted sense of humor?

2009 H2 and H2 SUT - first production E85-capable Hummers

As our brothers at Autoblog like to say, it’s “officially official.” GM has confirmed their plans to offer all Hummers with biofuel-capable engine options. According to Automotive News, a Hummer official has said that the 2009 H2 and H2 SUT will be equipped with flex-fuel engines capable on running on gasoline or ethanol, making them the first such Hummers available. The 2010 Hummer H3 will be offered with a flex-fuel version of GM’s direct injection 3.6L V-6 and we’ve heard plenty of rumblings regarding diesel Hummers too. Currently, the Hummer H3 is offered with a five-cylinder gasoline engine and a 5.3 liter small-block ͤ, both of which struggle to get fuel mileage in the mid-to-high teens. The H2 is available only with a larger 6.2 liter ͤ, which, as you can probably surmise, offers dismal fuel economy, and it would use even more fuel if it were running on ethanol. Emissions would probably be improved, but we’re still talking about lots of fuel being burned here. We’ll be on the lookout for more information on the biofuel capabilities of the Hummer brand, but we remain firmly in the bandaid-on-a-broken-arm camp on this particular announcement.

Ford expected to build North American Fiesta in Mexico

We still have another year and a half or so before the new Ford Fiesta will be available at North American Ford dealerships but we may know today where the little car will be built. Ford is expected to announce today that Fiestas for the the U.S. and Canadian markets will be built at one of Ford’s two Mexican assembly plants. When Ford launched the Fiesta at the Geneva Motor Show, they announced that the cars would be produced in Europe and Asia for those markets but had not yet decided where to source the North American edition.

Also undecided at this point is which body styles we will get here. The four-door sedan will definitely be available, but there is also a great deal of interest in the stylish hatchback model. Ford made a last minute decision to display the hatchback version of the Concept Verve at the Detroit Auto Show this year and it drew a lot of positive response. With stylish, well-equipped hatchbacks like the Honda Fit gaining in popularity, a similar Fiesta is a strong possibility. Now they just need to pull the program forward and bring this car to market as soon as possible. Along with the upcoming Fusion hybrid, the Fiesta could be a major shot in the arm for Ford in North America and they need it now.

Officially, official: Ford to build Fiesta in Cuautitlán, Mexico, US gets hatch!

Ford has finally made it official: the upcoming Fiesta for the North American market will be built at the company′s assembly plant in Cuautitlán, Mexico. Job 1 for Ford’s new B-class car will be coming up in early 2010. The plant near Mexico City currently builds F-Series pickups for the Mexican market and will be re-tooled starting later this year after production of the current generation trucks winds down. Once the revamp of the factory is complete, it will supply Fiestas for all North American markets. As part of the announcement, Ford also confirmed that U.S. customers will also get three body flavors of the Fiesta to choose from. In addition to the originally planned four-door sedan, we will indeed get both the three- and five-door hatchbacks. No word yet on which powertrains we’ll get for the Fiesta.

Ford also announced that the Chihuahua Engine Plant that builds four cylinder engines right now will add a new line to produce diesels for the light and medium duty trucks. This would be the 4.4L diesel V8 that is being added to the F-Series lineup next year.

MEXICO CITY, May 30, 2008 - Ford Motor Company today announced the new Ford Fiesta small car for North America will be produced at the company’s transformed Cuautitlán Assembly Plant beginning in early 2010 and a sporty European hatchback model is being added to the North American lineup alongside the popular sedan.

Transformation of the facility near Mexico City begins this year, as the plant is converted from its current production of F-Series pickups for the Mexican market to small cars for all of North America. The Chihuahua Engine Plant, which builds I-4 engines, also will assemble diesel engines for light- and medium-duty trucks in a variety of global markets. In addition, through a joint venture with Getrag (GFT), Ford will establish a new transmission plant in Guanajuato to support various Ford products. Company officials announced the trio of investments jointly with Mexico President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa.

The new multi-plant development effort represents a $3 billion U.S. investment, including the support of local suppliers. It is Mexico’s largest ever automotive investment. The moves are expected to create approximately 4,500 Ford jobs. Together with all direct and indirect employment at suppliers, the moves affect 30,000 jobs in Mexico.

“Ford is absolutely committed to leveraging our global assets to accelerate the shift to more fuel-efficient small cars and powertrain technologies that people really want and value,” said Ford President and CEO Alan Mulally, who was in Mexico for the announcement. “Our investments in these facilities in Mexico are part of our plan to further realign our manufacturing capacity in line with the introduction of more small cars and crossovers.”

A small car concept called the Verve showcased the design direction for the new Fiesta when it debuted at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January. Both sedan and hatchback models were displayed - with high praise from customers and the news media.

“Customers responded very positively after seeing both the sedan and hatchback versions of the Verve small car concept,” said Mark Fields, president of The Americas, Ford Motor Company. “We know the market is headed toward more small cars and crossovers. With our product and manufacturing flexibility, we will be able to offer both models and add production capacity.”

The New Ford Fiesta

When it goes on sale in North America in 2010, the new Fiesta will be bold and sophisticated - to help it clearly stand out from other small cars on the road. Ford is building on decades of small car leadership in Europe as it develops the new Fiesta for North America to appeal to increasingly savvy customers who value technology, design and fuel efficiency.

Momentum in small-car sales is outpacing overall industry growth worldwide. Globally, small car sales have grown from 23 million units in 2002 to an estimated 38 million in 2012.

Driving the growth in the North American market is a group of young people aged 13 to 28 years - dubbed “Millennials.” Today, this group stands 1.7 billion strong worldwide and will represent 28 percent of the total U.S. population by 2010.

The Fiesta is the first of Ford’s new global family of small cars set to debut in Europe and Asia later this year and next year - and in North America early in 2010.

“We’re looking at every aspect of what’s defined Ford as a small-car leader in Europe and working to build on this expertise in driving dynamics and design across a global family of Ford cars that are as exciting to drive as they are to look at,” said Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s group vice president, Global Product Development. “The Fiesta is designed to set a new world standard for quality, design, fuel economy and comfort in the small car segment.”

Ford in Mexico

With this investment, Ford - the first automaker to establish operations in Mexico - is building on a manufacturing presence of more than 80 years and an equally long tradition of supporting local communities.

“This opportunity to strengthen our business and the local industry has been made possible through support from the federal and state governments,” said Louise Goeser, president and CEO, Ford of Mexico. “We look forward to working together to drive continued success in the future.”

Ford officials made the announcements in a joint event featuring President Calderón as well as Governors Enrique Peña Nieto, José Reyes Baeza and Juan Manuel Oliva Ramírez.

The total investment is expected to increase Ford of Mexico’s annual production to nearly 500,000 vehicles and 330,000 engines by 2012, with nearly 80 percent of the vehicles and most of the engines slated for the North American market.

Today, Cuautitlán Assembly Plant makes trucks for the Mexican market, ranging from the Ford F-150 to the F-550. To meet future demand, trucks for Mexico will be imported from the U.S., making room for a new generation of small cars that are stylish and fun to drive.

Ford also has stamping and assembly plants in Hermosillo, Sonora, where the Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan and Lincoln MKZ sedans are built. These mid-size cars are sold throughout North America as well as Venezuela and Brazil and have won numerous quality awards.

“Our workers at the Hermosillo plant have been a key part in boosting Ford’s overall quality,” Fields said. “Ford vehicles are among the best in the business in terms of initial quality, and we intend to keep raising the bar with each new product we bring to market, including Fiesta.”
