Passat Lingyu

Shanghai VW, is bringing a hydrogen fuel cell-powered version of the Passat Lingyu to the LA Auto Show. The Shanghai Securities News, via Gasgoo, says this is the first China-made “new-energy car model” from VW to make an appearance at an auto show. It’s also the first-ever hydrogen Passat. The fuel cell Passat Lingyu (just rolls off the tongue, doesn′t it?) can go a reported 300 kilometers (186 miles) on a full charge and has a top speed of 150 km/h (about 93 mph) on the latest fuel cell system from SAIC (Shanghai VW’s parent) and its partners. SAIC is also behind the fuel cell Chevrolet Equinox that was used at the Beijing Olympics. Supposedly, Shanghai VW wants the hydrogen Passat Lingyu in mass production by 2010. We’ll find out more this week.

Leo Motors to supply electric vehicles to the Philippines

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

The Philippines is full of tricycles. In fact, there are some 2.2 million motorized rickshaws, which are known as tricycles or traysikels, in the country. Most of these are powered by very dirty engines that don’t have any real emissions equipment, and the government recognizes that this is a major problem. To help remedy the situation, the Philippines has entered into an agreement with Leo Motors to create a joint venture to build new electric taxis. A $5 million contribution by the government will get the ball rolling, and Leo Motors is to provide at least 2,500 electric vehicle kits, including batteries, that will be assembled by the newly formed company. Each unit will be powered by a lithium polymer battery that can either be recharged in the vehicle or swapped out at designated “Fresh Battery Stations” that are also to be built by the joint venture. The first city to get the EVs will be Puerto Princesa, the capital of the province of Palawan.

Financing lawsuit threatens Chrysler-Getrag dual clutch transmissions

Saturday, October 11th, 2008

Filed under:

The current credit crisis could be playing further havoc with Chrysler’s future powertrain product plans. In the first half of 2007, Chrysler announced investment plans to build two new engine plants and a transmission plant for 2010 model cars. The transmission facility was to be a joint venture with Getrag to build fuel saving dual clutch transmissions. Chrysler already offers German-built Getrag DCTs in the European specification Journey and Sebring. Unfortunately Getrag’s apparent inability to raise $300 million in debt financing that it committed to in the deal with Chrysler has led to a lawsuit from the automaker. Chrysler apparently wants damages for any delays to the program that might be caused by Getrag’s financing problems. The privately-held carmaker also wants Getrag to cover the costs of switching to another transmission supplier if that becomes necessary.

Apparently, Getrag was hoping to get the money through loans guaranteed by the German government. The Germans however, wanted Chrysler to put money in escrow to guarantee repayment. So far, construction at the plant site is continuing but it’s unclear how long that will go on.

VIDEO: Guernsey Smart EV gets tested

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

We’ve been saying recently how well electric cars seem to fit into island life and now we can bring you a very Smart example of that. One of our faithful readers was recently on the Channel island of Guernsey and had the opportunity to go for a test ride in a locally converted Smart along with his video camera and invites us all to view the result. First though, we offer a bit of background.

Mark Parr and his brother started The Electric Vehicle Company in an old shellfish factory on the West coast of the 24 square mile island and for the past few years have been perfecting their version of the electric Smart car. They’ve tried different battery technologies but now that they have incorporated lithium ion into the design, they seem satisfied with the result and are now offering them for sale. In fact, they’ve already sold three of the six they are currently working on. The Guernsey Smart EV is capable of 60 mph and has a range of up to 65 miles. It has regenerative braking and is a perfect fit for the islands narrow roads. According to the BBC, the price is £15,000 ($29,840). Go for a ride around the beautiful island after the jump. Thanks Andrew for the tip!

Geneva ‘08 Preview: Mila Alpin

Wednesday, December 31st, 1969

Magna International’s Austrian contract car building division, Magna Steyr, will be showing the third in a series of concepts at the Geneva Motor Show next week. Like its Magna Innovation Lightweight Auto predecessors, the new MILA Alpin is focused on minimal mass. In this case it’s designed as an all-terrain rock climber with a hybrid drive system fueled by natural gas. Magna designed the hybrid system in-house and has built the vehicle with a modular architecture that allows it to be manufactured with different combinations of hardware. The natural gas engine could easily be replaced by a small supercharged gasoline unit or something else entirely. The Alpin is capable of climbing a 45o slope and emitting less than 100g/km of CO2.

Here’s a no, um, brainer: Diesel fumes are bad for your head

Wednesday, December 31st, 1969

I don’t know about you, but the idea of diesel particulates (soot) lodging themselves on my brain doesn’t sit well with me. While scientists and researchers have known for some time that diesel soot clings to our grey matter, just recently Dutch scientists were able to convince 10 people to sit in a room filled with diesel exhaust so that they could monitor their brain waves. Not surprisingly, their brains showed signs of “stress” just thirty minutes into this operation. We’re not going to argue with these results… in fact we thought it was just common knowledge that breathing exhaust fumes, whether from either gas or diesel burning cars, was a bad idea. Ah well, at least we now have scientific data on the topic.

Ghosn: Nissan committed to becoming a “global leader” in affordable EVs

Wednesday, December 31st, 1969

Click the Denki Cube for a high res gallery.

According to Nissan and Renault head Carlos Ghosn, Nissan has plans to become a global leader in affordable electric vehicles. Citing rising oil costs and environmental issues, especially in emerging markets, Ghosn is quoted as suggesting that it was a “very easy″ decision when it comes to justifying Nissan’s commitment to zero-emission vehicles. Ghosn says, “We are looking at a future of permanently high energy costs.” He goes on, “That is why in our opinion it is time for zero-emissions cars, those that will be completely neutral to the environment.” While much of Nissan’s planned growth centers around emerging markets - oh, and the Middle East - those electric vehicles will most likely be offered here in the States as well, starting in 2011.

Don’t hold your breath for fuel cells, biofuel vehicles or more hybrids from Nissan, though. Nissan has partnered with NEC for the development of large-scale automotive batteries and believes that fully-electric vehicles are the way to go.

More details on the electric Triac emerge + new truck?

Wednesday, December 31st, 1969

Recently we broke a story about a new electric “highway capable″ three-wheeled car being prepared for the American market called the Triac. We promised to keep you posted and now that some interesting new details have emerged, behold the posting.

Apparently, many of you out there contacted Green Vehicles to seek out more information about the Triac for yourselves. It seems they might have been a little overwhelmed and it took a few days before a response was sent out en masse. The missive contained lots of interesting information which I will now share with you.

First of all, there were a couple of items from the video that were corrected. In the clip it states that the top speed of the vehicle is 70 mph. This is wrong. Green Vehicles is claiming that it can actually reach 80 mph. That’s a speed that can come in handy when you′re passing on the highway. The other metric to undergo revision was the range. This was lowered from 120 to 100 miles with the further explanation that the original figure was achieved at a relatively slow speed and that the new result was returned from a speed of 45 mph. Other Triac facts we learned were about the drivetrain. It will have a 5-speed transmission (we’re guessing manual) matched to a 20kW AC motor with “one of the world’s most sophisticated battery maintenance systems” to help you get the most out of your lithium ion battery pack. It’s onboard charger will allow you to plug it in to either a 120V or 240V outlet. Now, what was that about a truck? Hit the jump for more news.

Gallery: TRIAC

Also discussed in the e-mail was the news the the Triac would be joined in the Green Vehicles stable by an electric truck called the Buckshot. Using the same motor with a three speed transmission, it is being touted as a “true work truck″ and should have the necessary torque, durability and payload capacity that would entail. There will be different options available such as a lockable cargo shell or a steel lumber rack. It is differentiated from the NEVs that Green Vehicles will offer later this year so we are assuming it may be capable of decent speed though we haven’t heard any numbers yet. Also, we are assuming it will be a three-wheeler possibly in the reverse configuration of the Triac. We′ll tell you more as soon as it is revealed to us. For now you can see a couple larger views of the Triac in the gallery below. Scroll down a little farther to read the e-mail as it arrived to us and watch the video again.

Friends of Green Vehicles, We have received an incredible number of inquiries over the past week as a result of our YouTube video postings. So first, thank you for your interest in EVs and in Green Vehicles. We have been hard at work developing vehicles (and, as one recent web siteput it, we have been doing so in “stealth mode”) that will outperform your expectations without asking you to pay an unreachable premium. Our purpose for developing in such a fashion was to avoid making promises and predictions before knowing they can be kept.

So now that you know we exist, we’d like to tell you who we are. Our full website will be posted this in a matter of days; this will be a good place to begin. Please check it out. We are a Northern California based company that will begin selling two best-in-class Lithium-Ion powered pure electric vehicles early this summer. The TRIAC is a 5-speed freeway drivable 3-wheeler with a powerful 20kW AC motor capable of 80MPH (note the correction from video). On a single charge, at a speed of 45MPH, you can drive for 100 miles (we feel this is a more reasonable predictor of range than lower speed tests that led to 120 miles, as shown on the video- update forthcoming).

The BUCKSHOT (no footage posted yet) is a 3-speed Lithium-Ion powered truck also with a 20kW AC motor. This is a true work truck, with close attention paid to payload capacity, torque, and durability. For deliveries, the BUCKSHOT can come with a lockable cargo shell; for construction, a steel lumber rack; and for all-purpose functionality, a steel body with an extra-long bed and an ample passenger cabin. Environmentally conscious universities, businesses, and municipalities should take note of the BUCKSHOT; there is nothing like it!

Both vehicles come standard with one of the world’s most sophisticated battery maintenance systems to ensure that you get the full potential out of each high quality Lithium-Ion battery. Additionally, each EV has an onboard charger that can be plugged into 120V or 240V outlets, giving owners the option for faster charging without giving up the convenience of being able to plug in anywhere.

Green Vehicles′ two NEVs, the Microwatt and the Moose are still underdevelopment; our hope is to bring them to market this fall. In the neighborhood electric vehicle market, there is a delicate balance between affordability and quality; we are happy only when we can offer both. If your question is not addressed by the complete website or by this email, please accept our apology and send us a follow-up email atinfo@greenvehicles.com.

Best regards,
Green Vehicles

Triac to arrive this July, reservations being accepted, and other juicy details

Wednesday, December 31st, 1969

The wait for an all-electric highway commuter just got a whole lot shorter. If you wanted to buy a Tesla and had the cash, you would still have to wait until the 600 (and counting) folks in line in front of you received theirs before you could stop buying gas and start turning heads. That could take a while. Then there’s the Aptera. They only begin building their birds this Fall and there are 2,400 (and counting) folks with paid reservations in that line-up which ends, or at least pauses for effect, at the magic number of 3,000. But now, if you act fast, you may be able to jump into the beginning of a brand new queue. AutoblogGreen has just received word that Green Vehicles is accepting reservations (with a 10 percent fully refundable reservation fee) for July delivery of their new Triac (pictured above). That’s only 60 days away!

You want to try before you buy? The three wheeler will be available for test drives around the middle of July and, according to Green Vehicles president Ehab Youssef, they anticipate leasing as well as selling the vehicle. They can ship cars throughout the U.S. (though Ohio could pose a licensing problem) and Canada, not to mention most other countries as well. The missive sent out by the company also gives reassurances about the quality and safety of their product. What kind of reassurances? Join us on the other side of the break to find out.

Gallery: TRIAC

Reassurances… As I was saying, the prototypes have been in testing for a year now and they say the safety, power and functionality have all been improved. For instance, in the safety department, a structural steel safety cage designed by race car fabrication experts, Impact Engineering of San Jose, CA, has been integrated into the vehicle. The cars will be inspected and tested in the U.S. before they are sent home with their new owners and will come with a one year bumper-to-bumper warranty. Not only will the Triac come with a detailed manual that could help guide your local technician to resolve any problems that might arise but they also plan to carry and ship replacement parts. If the book isn’t providing the necessary insight, technical support will be made available to you over the telephone with qualified (non-outsourced) people.

The lithium ion batteries that supply the power are said to be good for 2000 cycles (about 5 years) and, as they are “monitored by the world’s most advanced battery management system,” you will be notified if there is a problem with any particular battery or if there is a charging or discharging issue.

Their website is being upgraded as we speak with even more details appearing over the next few days. You should soon be able to check out all the specs as well as see if there will be a dealership appearing sometime in your neck of the woods. So, come on: Triac, you’ll like it.

Audi will intro Q7 hybrid in late ‘08 in Europe, no U.S. plans at the moment

Wednesday, December 31st, 1969

Ok here’s the deal. Audi is building a hybrid Q7. It will be launched in late 2008. After our last report on the subject, I contacted Audi US spokesman Christian Bokich to get clarification on the on-again, off-again hybrid SUV. Chris verified that Audi AG will indeed build a ̱ hybrid and that no plans for U.S. availability have been announced. The only new ̱ variant that has been announced for the U.S. is the 3.0L TDI diesel. Our European friends will, however, have access to the gas electric powertrain that pairs up a 3.6L direct injected V6 with a electric drive. The V6 will apparently put out 280bhp and 277lb-ft f torque. Combined with a battery and motor, this configuration is expected to yield around 24mpg - about the same as the diesel Q7 I recently sampled. According to a Channel 4 report from the UK, the ̱ system was developed along with Porsche’s system for the Cayenne; that one won’t appear in production until 2010.
