At various times over the past ten years, Mercedes-Benz has investigated the possibility of bringing its compact front wheel drive A- and B-class cars to the US market. The slightly larger B has been available north of the border in Canada for several years. Oddly enough, the fuel prices that have long been taxed to higher levels than in this country have stimulated demand for more efficient cars (imagine that!) and Mercedes has responded. Until now, though, neither car has been offered in the US because Daimler didn′t feel it could sell them in high enough volumes to be profitable.

With the total car market in this country in decline right now, even the German luxury brands are looking at more affordable options to pull in customers. Mercedes is working to significantly reduce the production cost of the next generation of the A and B and those cars are being considered for the US in 2012 when they debut.

80 mpg Mustang back, will drive to SEMA and record mileage

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Remember Doug Pelmear, the inventor and mechanic from Toledo, Ohio who claims that his late-80’s Fox Body Mustang makes 400-horsepower and still manages to return 80 miles per gallon? Doug’s back in Toledo’s news and he’s making the same claims as before. In fact, Pelmear’s Mustang can run on ethanol and in so doing, he says, can get up to 110 miles per gallon equivalent. Apparently, Doug’s claims have been met with some skepticism, which isn’t really surprising considering that the claims seem rather outrageous, so he’s got a plan to prove that his Grandfather’s invention works as advertised. Doug will drive his 1987 Mustang from Toledo to Las Vegas, Nevada for the upcoming SEMA Show.

Along the way to Vegas, Doug and his team will keep track of his car’s fuel mileage and will report it after the 4,000 mile round trip is completed. Afterward, the Mustang will be entered into the Automotive X-Prize. We’re still firmly in the skeptical camp, but this is one of those instances where we’d love to see ourselves proven wrong. Maybe if it works, the nation’s attention will turn from Toledo’s other recently-famous person, Joe the Plumber.

Join T. Boone Pickens for an “online rally” over the energy plan tonight

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

The second U.S. presidential candidate debate is tonight, and it’s likely that energy policy will come up in some fashion. Central casting’s best-named oil man, T. Boone Pickens, wants to make sure the debate starts a bigger discussion on energy use in America and so he is hosting an “online rally″ tonight during and following the debate. Barack Obama and John McCain are scheduled to being a 9 p.m. EST, and that’s when the rally starts as well.

Sierra Club Executive Director Carl Pope will join Pickens for a rally that “will feature live video from Pickens Plan HQ in Dallas and you will have an opportunity to submit questions and comments about America’s energy future.” Pickens unveiled his self-titled Pickens Plan - big on wind energy and natural gas - in July and he laid out his political attitude for 2008 when we heard him speak back in May. Let’s just say that Mr. Swift Boat wants John McCain to win, but is much less partisan this time around than he was in 2004. Since both McCain and Obama have met privately with Pickens this year, we can take serious his group’s statement that, “We will be delivering a copy of your questions and comments to both Presidential candidates, so don’t miss this opportunity to lend your voice to the call for American energy independence!” I′ll take a pass on the “rally” tonight, but if you join up, I’d like to hear your report in the comments section.

BYD getting Israeli partner to compete with Renault and Better Place

Monday, August 25th, 2008

If competition spurs companies to improve the quality of their offerings and the speed with which they innovate, then we may soon expect more from Shai Agassi’s Better Place and its partner in Israel, Renault. While BYD already announced they would be selling electric vehicles in Israel earlier this month, that pronunciation gains serious weight with the news that IDB Holding Corp. Ltd. is said to be close to officially announcing a deal with the Chinese automaker to bring both its all-electric ʸ and its 60 mile plug-in serial hybrid (PHEV) ˂DM to the Jewish state.

IDB, which is run by its largest shareholder, Nochi Dankner, has interests in most areas of the Israeli economy save for automobile importing. The shouldn’t prove overly problematic as the Lubinsky and Livnat families, who together hold 50 percent of the company, are currently importers of Peugeot and Citroen and have experience in the truck industry. They also operate a network of service stations and “logistic centers.” It should be interesting to see whether they employ a cooperative or confrontational approach to competing with the Better Place and their partner, Renault. You bring the popcorn and we’ll bring the details of any upcoming battles royale.

La Poste wants to buy 3000 EVs

Wednesday, December 31st, 1969

The French postal service (La Poste) has just released a public announcement saying they intend to buy 300 EVs for postal delivery. The amount could be increased to 3000 by the end of 2012. The public announcement not only includes the purchase of the EVs but also the maintenance contracts.

La Poste already has a small fleet of GEM e2/Matra NEVs being tested in Alsace, in the East of France. The vehicles are mostly used for urban deliveries and have a range of about 50 km (30 miles). They can be loaded with up to 150 kg (about 330 pounds), which is a lot of postcards. The French postal service is also starting to get the first of its 500 Renault Kangoo Cleanova II order. The car is a series hybrid with a small 2-cylinder engine and will be used for suburban delivering. If the later turns out to be a success, La Poste plans to have 10,000 vans like these by the end of 2013.

Newteon and Mirco-Vett’s electric Fiat Doblo headed to La Poste

Wednesday, December 31st, 1969

Last week, the French postal service La Poste announced it’s intent to buy a lot of electric vehicles for mail carriers to use. Newteon, the company that works with Micro-Vett and Fiat on vehicles like the all-electric Fiat Doblo and Fiorino, now says its vehicles have made La Poste’s short list of potential additions to the fleet. A prototype Doblo EV will be delivered to La Poste this summer and then four or five more will be tested in the fall. Micro-Vett converts the Fiats and Newteon distributes the vehicles exclusively in France and other EU countries. Since La Poste is interested in at least 500 EVs, and potentially 10,000 in five years, getting on the short list could propel Mirco-Vett and Newteon into the big(ger) leagues. Thanks to Fabien for the tip.

PSA-Venturi partnership selected to provide electric vans to French Post Office

Wednesday, December 31st, 1969

Like Newteon, PSA Peugeot Citroen is eyeing the EV contract for La Poste. PSA is teaming up with Monaco-based Venturi Automobiles to produce battery-powered vans based on the Citro&eumln Berlingo First and Peugeot Partner Origin for the French Post office. The partnership will produce a small batch of vans for a six month test program. Venturi has been developing high dollar electric sports cars and less expensive oddball buggies. For this project, Venturi will contribute a new compact electric powertrain that allows the motor, battery and electronics to be mounted underhood and give the delivery vans a 60-mile range. After the trial ends La Poste, will select a vendor to produce 500 electric mail vans.

Venturi Automobiles, in Partnership With PSA Peugeot Citroën, Preselected in International EV Tender By La Poste
Venturi Automobiles and PSA Peugeot Citro&eumln have joined forces to supply Citro&eumln Berlingo First or Peugeot Partner Origin-type electric vans in response to a tender from the French Post Office, La Poste.
Issued in April 2007, the international tender initially involves the supply of a small number of test vehicles. Following a six-month trial period, during which the vehicles with be thoroughly tested, La Poste will select the supplier of 500 mail delivery vans.

As Venturi Automobiles’ partner, PSA Peugeot Citroën feels that this phase of real-world testing represents a valuable opportunity to fine-tune the technological solutions equipping these delivery vans, to align them seamlessly with La Poste’s expectations.

The Berlingo Citroen / Peugeot Partner will be tested with an entirely new power train proposed by Venturi. This extremely compact technology makes it possible to fit the electric motor, battery and other EV components inside the van’s engine compartment, in lieu of the internal combustion engine. This offers the major advantage of ensuring the same load volume and payload as in a conventional version.

The electric Berlingo/Partners will have a range of up to 100 kilometers, which is amply sufficient to cover their mail delivery routes.

PSA Peugeot Citroën will contribute its automotive expertise and experience, particularly in electric vehicles.

Venturi will provide its particularly compact and innovative powertrain solution, as well as its short-run production capabilities

The partnership will enable PSA Peugeot Citroën to relaunch its EV business, where it was a pioneer and European market leader, with nearly 10,000 vehicles sold. The Group believes that in the future, electric vehicles will play an important role in reducing automotive emissions, with sales being driven primarily by city delivery vans.

PSA Peugeot Citro&eumln is the world’s leading manufacturer of low-emission vehicles. In 2007, it sold in Europe more than one million vehicles emitting less the 140g of C̘/km.
With operations in 150 countries through its Peugeot and Citroën marques, the Group employs more than 200,000 people around the world.

Since 2001, Venturi Automobiles has led a sustained innovation drive that has made it an undisputed leader in electric vehicles. Its expertise in the world’s most advanced EV technological solutions extends from city quad-bikes to high-performance sports cars.

Citroën Berlingo Venturi in Monaco

Wednesday, December 31st, 1969

French website Leblogauto writers went to the EVER Salon in Monaco and gathered information and pictures from the Citroën Berlingo Venturi, which is one of the two vehicles competing for the French Postal Service (La Poste) contract for suburban delivery EVs.

Although the range isn’t that spectacular (60 miles), performance should be enough for postal duties: cargo space and payload remain unchanged from the gas/diesel versions. According to the manufacturers, the vehicle is able to achieve highway speeds effortlessly and can be recharged from a simple power outlet for less than 1 &euro / 100 km. Being optimistic, the diesel version makes about 7 l/100 km, at 1.30 EUR/l you can do the math. Price range is expected to be between &euro25,000-35,000.

Moped gets in on the air-powered fun

Wednesday, December 31st, 1969

Click on the image to watch a video of a prior air-powered bike

While we’ve seen plenty of air-powered cars, but this may be the first compressed air-powered moped that we’ve laid our eyes on. Created by inventor and TV presenter Jem Stansfield, the air-powered moped was created for a U.K. National Geographic channel documentary called Planet Mechanics. Compressed air is stored in a couple of carbon fiber tanks originally used by firefighters which can be refilled in just a few seconds using larger air containers. Once filled, the bike is capable of traveling at eighteen miles per hour for up to seven miles. That’s not going to set any records, but for a quick little build using off-the-shelf parts, it’s not too bad at all!

This air-powered moped is not Stansfield’s first attempt at such a machine. Be sure to watch the video after the break for some more air-powered bicycle fun.

Toyota pushing dealerships to go green with LEED certification

Wednesday, December 31st, 1969

Toyota of Rockwall in Texas has become the first automotive dealership in the country to be given a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification. Just a little while ago, Pat Lobb Toyota in McKinney, Texas managed to get a Silver certification and was the first auto dealership to be LEED certified at all. Not too shabby. But more are on the way, as Michael Bevan, Corporate Manager, Retail Market Development at Toyota Motor Sales in the U.S. says, “We expect there will be six LEED certified Toyota dealerships by this summer. We’ve also been working with other auto companies on the dynamics of building a LEED dealership and they are beginning to build facilities for LEED certification.” Some examples of the lengths Toyota of Rockwall went to get the Gold are water cisterns which capture rain water for use in irrigation and exterior panels made from ninety percent recycled aluminum.

In order to facilitate the greening of its dealerships, Toyota has created what it calls its “Image II program,” where dealerships can order “turn-key” LEED certified buildings. For what it’s worth, Toyota has a network of over 1,400 dealerships to oversee.

Press Release:

Eco-Friendly Dealerships Taking Leadership Role in Environmental Construction

Toyota of Rockwall (Texas) is the first dealership in the country to receive LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

Torrance, Calif. (PRWEB) May 15, 2008 — Once a symbolic target of environmentalists, auto dealerships are now playing a leading role in the development of buildings and facilities exemplifying leading-edge environmental construction standards.

Toyota of Rockwall (Texas) is the first dealership in the country to receive LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Rockwall joins Pat Lobb Toyota (McKinney, Texas), which earlier received a Silver certification as the first dealership to be LEED certified. But they won’t be the last.

The USGBC reports that 48 percent of the nation’s energy is used by buildings, including 70 percent of the nation’s electric use. In addition to more fuel-efficient vehicles, automakers have discovered another way to address the nation’s energy problem is to build more efficient dealerships focusing on sustainable building processes.

Dealers are recognizing the advantages and opportunities presented by building green
“Dealers are recognizing the advantages and opportunities presented by building green,” says Michael Bevan, Corporate Manager, Retail Market Development at Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. “Research shows that consumers are becoming increasingly aware of businesses in their community that are taking a leadership role in addressing environmental issues. It also makes good business sense to dealers who can re-coup their investment and start realizing savings in five years or less.

“We expect there will be six LEED certified Toyota dealerships by this summer. We′ve also been working with other auto companies on the dynamics of building a LEED dealership and they are beginning to build facilities for LEED certification.”

The USGBC is a non-profit organization committed to expanding sustainable building practices. It provides various levels of LEED certification based on evaluations in such areas as sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

To achieve Gold certification status, Toyota of Rockwall made extensive use of recycled and energy-saving materials. For instance, four water cisterns capable of holding 63,500 gallons of rainwater and air conditioning condensation are used for landscape irrigation. The landscape itself consists of native plants, trees and grasses that are drought and disease-resistant. The roof is made of materials that reflect 90 percent of the sun’s heat energy.

“Once we decided to do a green dealership, we decided to stretch the envelope and go for the Gold,” said Steve Jackson, owner of Toyota of Rockwall. “We hope to play a leadership role in building environmental awareness in the community and be a place where students come to learn about the environment.”

Both certified Toyota dealerships were built as part of the company’s Eco-Image USA II initiative that also puts an emphasis on the environment. Under the program, panels used on the building’s exterior are made up of 90 percent recycled aluminum. The distinctive portal entryway uses non-lead glass and shades the showroom from direct sunlight. LED lighting is used rather than incandescent and fluorescent lights to further reduce energy use. Toyota also is assisting dealers with cutting edge green options, including different power sources such as solar, wind and geothermal.

“We wanted to provide dealers with the opportunity and encouragement to pursue LEED certification when building or updating their facilities,” Bevan said. “There’s even an Image II program that provides dealers with a ‘turn-key’ LEED certified dealership. The dealer can continue to focus on selling vehicles while the new dealership is being constructed.”

Jaguar and Land Rover looking at hybrids within 5 years

Wednesday, December 31st, 1969

Jaguar and Land Rover are looking to offer hybrid vehicles for sale within the next five years. It seems reasonable to conclude that they will parlay the experience gained from the government-sponsored testing that they recently were awarded into real production systems. According to reports, Jaguar is considering using a system similar to the one that Mercedes-Benz is working on for its flagship S-Class hybrid. The S-Class is expected to pair a 3.5 liter V6 engine to the ZF transmission, while Jaguar is said to be considering both a 3.0 liter diesel engine and a 5.0 liter gasoline direct injected ͤ.

Land Rover, on the other hand, seems ready to create its own home-grown hybrid system using something it calls the “Electric Rear Axle Drive.” One thing that seems certain is that Tata Motors has plans to keep its two new luxury marques on the top of the technology curve, which could mean good things for the two ailing brands.

Jaguar and Land Rover hiring 600 to cut CO emissions

Wednesday, December 31st, 1969

Now that Jaguar and Land Rover are no longer part of the Ford family, they can’t rely on the engineers in Dearborn to provide them with technology they need to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. The new owners from Tata also don’t have that expertise in house. With CO2 emissions limits coming to Europe, Jaguar and Land Rover are in the process of hiring 600 people, many of whom will be engineers with the knowledge required to develop hybrid and electric drive systems as well as other new powertrain technology. The Land Rover LR2/Freelander will get a start-stop system this fall and a production version of the LRX concept is expected to debut in the next couple of years. Jaguar so far hasn’t implemented any of these types of systems in its cars, although European models do offer diesel engines.
