Fisker reveals production Karma hybrid

California’s Fisker Automotive has confirmed today that its upcoming Karma plug-in hybrid will be shown for the first time in full production trim at next month’s Detroit Auto Show. With only minor design enhancements made to the exterior of the original concept, the production Karma, seen here for the first time, retains the extreme proportions and sculptured look of the show car.

"We are very excited to be bringing the Fisker Karma back to NAIAS," said Fisker Automotive CEO Henrik Fisker. "In the year since we debuted the Karma, the reception we’ve received has been tremendous. I’m proud to announce at this time that we are already sold out on the car until mid-2010." With a base price of $87,900, the environmentally friendly luxury saloon is scheduled to begin delivery in November next year.

Featuring a proprietary ‘Q-Drive’ powertrain, the Karma will have an all-electric range of 50 miles (80km). After the all-electric 50 miles, a petrol-powered GM Ecotec engine turns a generator to charge a lithium-ion battery. There is also a roof-mounted solar panel for additional charge capacity. With this balance of electric and petrol driving, Fisker estimates that most Karma drivers who charge the vehicle overnight and commute less than 50 miles per day will be able to achieve an average fuel economy of 100 mpg (2.4L/100km) per year.

Drive comes from two electric motors with a combined output of 408hp (300kW), which is enough to send the vehicle to a top speed of 125mph and push it from 0-60mph in just 5.8 seconds.

The production model will feature a revised upper grill that is slightly larger towards the outer corners. The lower air intake has also been enlarged to allow for more airflow and underneath the rear bumper, an aerodynamic diffuser includes the integration of a cooling cover for the electric drivetrain.

To optimize cooling and aerodynamics, the exhaust pipe from the petrol engine is routed directly out behind the front wheels. A small functional side vent will release the hot air when the engine is turned on. The production Karma also features a complete flush B-pillar.

Underneath the Karma is an all aluminum spaceframe made in cooperation with Norsk Hydro. The exterior body is a combination of aluminum panels and composite panels.

The Karma will be assembled by Valmet in Finland. Yearly volume is anticipated to reach 15,000 cars per year, with half of these expected to be sold in Europe.

Tires for 2001 Prius

Monday, December 1st, 2008

I need to replace the tires on my 2001 Prius. The current set are Goodyear Aquatred 3 which I chose for a little more traction than the low rolling resistance Bridgestones which were OEM. The Aquatreds cut my mileage some and I′m willing to live with that, but it’s been over 4 years since I bought those and I′m hoping that there are some better alternatives available. Any advice gratefully received.

Strange odor: battery outgassing??

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

I bought a used 2006 Lexus RX400h used and did not notice a strange odor in the cabin until it was too late. To me, it is a "chemical" odor that I would associate with outgassing of some material. To some, it smells like spicey peppers (e.g., in Thai food). The odor builds up when the car is turned off and closed up. It appears to disipate within a minute or less after driving, probably due to dilution by air from the cabin ventilation system. Recently, I tried to locate the source of the smell by sniffing around. That day, it appeared to be coming from the vents to the battery compartment (vents are located under the rear seat). I also sometimes detect the odor when I step out of the vehicle. One guess is that the odor is due to outgassing from the battery, perhaps due to a breach in the casing; however, I don’t have anything to back this up except the apparent location of the source, which is itself suspect. Has anyone had this problem or heard of others having it?

C-SPAN ‘transportation issues’ Wed. Nov. 26

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

Wednesday morning, C-SPAN will have a program that includes ‘transportation issues.’ Things to look for:

  • "Bell the Hybrid" nonsense
  • False hybrid claims (aka., they aren’t profitable)
  • Bailout

Just a heads up for those still up or reading this in the morning.

Can I get feedback?

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Hey everyone, I′m new here, I had to write a research paper for my writing class in college (2nd year Mechanical Engineering major) and the paper had to relate to our major. After this, we had to create an alternative document that the public can use and then receive feedback on it. I was wondering if you could look at the site and then tell me what you think. It’s not perfect yet but it’s working. Thanks http://hybridcarresearch.webs.com/

Living With Ed

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Caught this series on Planet Green last night. OMG! I love it. Something of a green reality TV show.

Ed Begley Jr. and his wife Rachelle Carson (who is drop dead gorgeous) try to &quotgreen&quot their neighbors and friends. Lots of pretty good husband/wife contention.

In Rachelle’s words, "Ed needs to be watched", as in keep an eye on him to ensure he’s not doing something insane. He can be a bit, um, quirky.

Show profiles some pretty cool technology, even if some of it is priced beyond the means of most mortals.

2 episodes I caught last night had Cheryl Tiegs and Larry Hagman. Tiegs wants to green up her home.

Hagman already has a huge PV array and a number of other things to reduce consumption. His electric bill last year was $13 because he produces enough electricity that gets sold back to the utility. Before the PV array, he was paying $37K a year for electric. Ed had a company bring out some wind generators to consider.

Yeah, lots of opulence of the celebs.

It was also really cool seeing Begley’s RAV4 EV and Larry Hagman’s E-bike.

Thoughts on bailout — over played hand

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Hi,

My apologies to those who work for the big three auto companies. This is not personal but motivated by how badly the Big 3 played their attempted grab at $25 B for CAFE retooling. It comes from this editorial:

Quote:

Editorial: Careful bailout only option for the Big 3; Any other move could be catastrophic
by The Ann Arbor News
Tuesday November 18, 2008, 12:30 PM
. . .
The Ann Arbor-based Center for Automotive Research released a memorandum earlier this month
. . .
Government tax revenues would drop by $60 billion, including $25 billion in income taxes alone.

That’s right: In just one year, the government would forever lose the same amount of revenue that is now being proposed for a loan. David Cole, CAR chairman and lead author of the memorandum, concluded in a prepared statement: . . .

What pisses me off is "$25 B.," the exact same amount authorized to support retooling to meet CAFE standards. Had any other number come in, say $30 B or $20 B, I would have let it pass but "$25 B" is exactly the amount authorized to support meeting CAFE standards. Now the "Big 3" are saying, they can’t even stay in business unless we take off the CAFE standards attached to this "$25 B."

Well I′m of the opinion we should say, &quotThank you for the heads up!&quot and offer this counter proposal:

  • Go into Chapter 11 as soon as possible and identify which banks you want to "borrow" money to stay in operation.
  • Secretary Paulson will direct part of the $700 B. authorized for banks so they can loan you whatever money you need to stay in business.
  • Whoever survives to apply for the $25 B. retooling will get the share you were planning to get.

Now everyone is happy but this latest article adds another piece of circumstantial evidence about who provided CNW Marketing with their junk science, "Ann Arbor-based Center for Automotive Research."

CNW Marketing dressed up their nonsense report, "Dust-to-Dust," with a lot of faux data tables well beyond their ordinary area of expertise. CNW Marketing interviews dealers and some customers and don’t track manufacturing. The "Harbor Report" group covers manufacturing and they have done nothing to support the bogus claims of "Dust-to-Dust." But "Ann Arbor-based Center for Automotive Research" would be exactly the type of group who could dream up the bogus tables in "Dust-to-Dust."

For a long time, I’ve suspected there had to be an organization that handles and organizes hybrid skepticism. There had to be some way that the "Big 3" could collaborate in the public forum and insulate themselves from being ‘the bad guy.’ David Cole’s organization, "Center for Automotive Research," is the perfect front.

Understand that I don’t believe even for a nanosecond that if "Center for Automotive Research" disappeared tomorrow there wouldn’t be three more that suddenly spring up. But knowing who they are and what they are about helps research where hybrid skeptic reports are likely to have come from. Never ignore your ‘honorable competition.’

In summary, the "Big 3" can seek immediate relief with Chapter 11. This will give them a way to tap the $700 B in Paulson’s hands by a bank to launder the money. They have less than 60 days to act before a new administration, one not in their pocket, comes into office. The clock is ticking and at the rate Paulson is giving the money away, running out.

Fiat Off-Road Hybrid

Monday, November 17th, 2008

Fiat Buggy runs on Plug-in LiIon Batteries, Gas, E100, CNG.

Some might view an environmentally friendly off-road vehicle as a contradiction in terms, but as far as the Brazilian team that designed the Fiat Bugster is concerned, it’s all about guilt-free fun.

The Bugster, rolled out this week at the little-known Sao Paulo motor show in Brazil, is a plug-in electric car powered by 93 lithium-ion batteries built into the chassis. The car can run on electricity, gas, E100, gas/ethanol blend, or compressed natural gas.

An offer they can’t refuse …

Monday, November 17th, 2008

Ok, here is the deal:

  • Bailout for US car makers
  • Funded by excess profits tax on oil companies
    • discounted by purchase of US car maker stock

So what happens is the excess inventory or large vehicles are sold by Exxon, Chevron, Citco, Shell, BP, e.t.c. What a perfect irony, the buyers just pay and pay and pay.
