Personal rant

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Hi,

It wasn’t until Congress went into recess without passing HR 5734 that I realized how obsessed I’ve been on defeating the &quotBell the Hybrid Act.&quot Two 750 mile trips, one to DC and one to HybridFest about $500 in mailing costs; about $300 in keyfobs and a development kit, and; well over 200 hours of labor. The only thing worse would have been for this terrible legislation to pass. Fortunately, I have only two remaining tasks and hopefully this will put it to bed.

I’m mostly unhappy that this effort was necessary because it delayed so many more interesting investigations (and made me poor company.) But the only thing I regret was not being more effective. For example, I should have had a press package when I went to DC and some of my mailings could have been more effective. Still I have learned lessons on how the legislative system works, which is nothing I would wish on anyone.

I want to thank everyone who helped me along the way. The petitions, letters to Congress and newspapers and every independent action helped. No one person can affect the course of legislation, it takes a team.

Thank you everyone who helped!

Hybrid drivers, please read and help me :)

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

Hello everyone, I was hoping you all could help me conduct some research for my college sociology class. My thesis topic is "Hybrid drivers/owners are more likely to be democrats.".

I am not asking you to state your political party if you do not wish to do so, but I hope that you will vote in the poll here and help me out. :)

Your names and other private information will be kept secret and not discussed in my paper. (Not that I have access to that kind of info anyways, but I thought it’d be good to let you guys know.)

Thank you very much, and I hope that you’ll take the time to merely click "yes" or "no" :)

Talkin’ trash in the office

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

Hi,

Working in an open office, I was trying to get some work out Friday afternoon when one of the ’self appointed’ political lout mouths came over and started a ‘gab-fest’ on politics with about half a dozen of my co-workers. Politics works best when folks have a free and frank discussion but not in an open office space … especially when we are all working on a government contract. So I sent a note to HR without naming names, and suggested they republish the corporate policy on political discussions at work.

Along comes Tuesday afternoon and again, another pair decide they have to ‘agree out loud′ on their political point of view, right next to my cube. I really had work to do so I popped up and asked them to ‘take it outside.’ But it really ticked me off. Talking political trash talk in an open office is unethical because it steals labor hours from my employer.

This morning, at home, I donated a enough money to a political campaign to soon show up on "OpenSecrets.org" soon as they ‘get around to it.’ Then a web form popped up asking for some more e-mail addresses and their ’standard note.’ … Yeap! I knew exactly who to send.

I addressed the note to three of the primary loud mouths who’d disturbed my work on Friday and Tuesday. I then added some text about discussing politics ‘in an open office’ and invited them to talk politics at lunch or after work at a bar. I then hit "submit" on the form. FYI, I belong to the ‘work is work′ and ‘politics is not work′ political party, something the loud mouths haven’t a clue about. At the bottom of the note, I pointed out that normally I put things off but if it becomes necessary, I know where to give more.

I’ve probably wounded some feelings but you know it is better to give an ulcer than receive.

Completely off-topic: baseball cards

Sunday, September 14th, 2008

I have come into possession of approximately 10,000 baseball cards. I don′t collect them myself and so have no desire to keep them, but I’m wondering what I should expect if I took them to a local shop and just made a deal for the batch, and is that even a possibility?

For those knowledgeable in this area, here’s a little more info:
- The cards are all in excellent condition but have NOT been individually wrapped or anything like that. They′re simply stacked in boxes.
- A quick survey didn’t reveal much in the way of potential megabuck cards (rookie cards of famous players, etc), but I haven’t even gone through 10%.
- Survey also revealed the cards range from the late 70’s to mid-90’s and are from a number of different brands (Topps, Donruss, etc).

I’ve thought of E-bay, Craigslist, etc, just not sure how I’d approach it. I don’t expect to get thousands of dollars, but if they’re worth just a nickel apiece that would be $500. If I though I could get that, I’d take it right now and the buyer is free to exploit whatever "hidden treasures" they might find in the collection. Is that unreasonable? Any guess as to just what might a batch like this be worth?

9-11-2001 We Won’t Forget!

Friday, September 12th, 2008

I just wanted to share with you all how I took the opportunity yesterday to make sure people don′t forget 9-11

For those that got to join us, Thanks!
We started to line up at 10:30am. A Breakfast Buffet was set out for us.
After a few local politicians gave their speeches thanking us we heard from a local person who recalled how he was helping pull people up from off the street and out of hams way.
A priest led us all in prayer and then some last minute directions and we were off shortly after 2pm.

This was an amazing ride. Approximately 65 miles of MAJOR Highways and roads completely closed off to allow over 430 bikes to roll through 2 x 2 without breaking the line.

Stop to think about this: The Taconic State Parkway, The Saw Mill Parkway, The Moshula Parkway, Main Streets through The Bronx and the Henry Hudson Parkway (aka West Side Highway) For anyone familiar with this area…those roads are packed with cars all day!

Our ride was greeted by many positioned on Overpasses, Side Roads, Side Walks and waving from buildings as well. One of the best was a group of people on the West Side Highway who greeted us with a large banner welcoming our pilgrimage.

After we arrived at 60 Centre St., our designated parking location. We walked down to the site and then onto Battery Park where we signed the Beam http://www.downtownny.com/news?nid=142 Then headed back up to Little Italy where we had dinner and enjoyed some dessert at the 81st Annual Feast of San Gennaro http://www.sangennaro.org/

When we left somewhere around 9pm, there were still a number of riders parked downtown. We ended up catching a ride with a group heading back to Albany, NY We rode with them out of the city until we had to make a fuel stop.

Well it was an amazing feat by the organizers and a very enjoyable ride to bring attention to a day we should not forget. Though the site is completely blocked off from public view today and looks incredibly different than last year, it is a pilgrimage I will continue to make.

Lost in translation

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

After spending most of the day searching for information on low rolling resistance tires, I came across the following link which made me laugh out loud:

"Tire manufactures ingest a flower of foam particles to display a more forcefulness efficient, formal low-rolling tire."

So helpful. Not.

It’s a GIRL!

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Okay… so 90% sure, but good enough for me!

The whole reason for my Camry Hybrid was because my wife and I are expecting child #2. I′ve been hoping for a girl (I wanted a matched set) and my wife was hoping for a boy. We BOTH wanted healthy, so we both win on that.

Anyway… It’s a Girl! They are 90% sure right now. We will have a 100% accurate result in 2 weeks once the amnio results come back.

Just wanted to share.

Interactive GPS shows police presence and cheap fuel

Interactive GPS shows police presence and cheap fuel

Dutch navigation company TomTom has unveiled a new satnav system that can update its maps in real-time for a number of different traffic conditions in order to help minimize time spent behind the wheel. The company unveiled the new device at the IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin this week, and plans to offer it in the Netherlands, UK, Germany, France and Switzerland in coming months.
Called the GO x40 LIVE series, the latest satnav system delivers dynamic navigation and route guidance that continuously adapts to changing road conditions on the fly. Stored within the system is a list of historical travel time information for every road, specified for every day of the week, at five minute intervals.
The new device works by comparing these figures with estimated figures calculated in real-time using information gathered from anonymous measurements of mobile phones moving through their networks, and reroutes a journey onto side roads if it predicts the alternate route will be quicker. For example, a large number of phones stationary on a busy highway is assumed to mean that many motorists are stuck there in a traffic jam.
It also connects to TomTom’s current High Definition (HD) Traffic service for more accurate and detailed live traffic information.
The feature list doesn’t end there, however, as the GO ⼈ LIVE GPS units allow individuals to update the maps with live information such as the locations of mobile police radar and cameras, as well as cheap fuel prices. Other motorists in the area can then be warned to slow down or to look out for the cheapest fuel stations. There’s also full voice-activated control and Bluetooth connectivity.
The GO ⼈ LIVE series is currently limited to the aforementioned European countries but there are plans to expand its network capability to other countries in the near future.
